Construction Manager

Position Overview

The Construction Manager will be responsible for the overall construction of industrial projects assigned and provides guidance to project staff and is responsible for the smooth functioning of day to day operations by influencing, developing and implementing agreed upon project plans ensuring that projects are completed on time and within budget.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the planning and implementation of assigned projects
  • Provides clear direction to team members and distributes workload to capitalize on individual and group strengths while ensuring balanced exposure to work experience and development opportunities
  • Responsible for the overall project performance including schedule, budget, quality and safety
  • Review the project plans and specifications and comment on the building design, scheduling, possible cost savings measures and potential construction problems
  • Maintain excellent relationships with municipalities, clients, architect, consultants, subcontractors, and internal project team
  • Advise project teams on obtaining Building Permits through coordinating drawings and information required for the application and approval process and assist in obtaining all other municipal permits
  • Advise project teams on issue the project tender packages, including scopes of work customized for the specific project, review quotations and provide bid analysis and recommendations for approval
  • Advise project teams on developing a schedule for project completion that effectively allocates the resources to the activities and provide updates to all stakeholders
  • Provide timely and effective project reporting including monthly project status reports, cost forecasting, cash flows, schedule updates, safety and quality updates and issues
  • Oversee and ensure minutes are recorded for applicable meetings required for the projects including consultant, subtrade, client and internal meetings 
  • Ensure project teams understand and enforce contractual responsibilities, contract documents and provide dispute resolution
  • Advise project teams on all change order issues including tracking, negotiating, processing and assessing cost and schedule impacts
  • Review the quality of the work completed with the project team during site visits on a regular basis to ensure that the work meets the specifications
  • Monitor site safety and ensure that the requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and the Beedie Health and Safety policies are enforced on site
  • Oversee project closeout and evaluate the outcomes of the project as established during the planning phase and provide a final report on the lessons learned

Desired Skills and Experience

  • Post secondary education in Construction Management or a related field, or equivalent experience;
  • 10+ years’ experience in the construction field, preferably on industrial construction projects;
  • Excellent leadership skills and experience mentoring, managing, motivating and developing staff;
  • Experience with large complex projects up to $150 million in size
  • Demonstrate ability to effectively manage, timelines and budgets to ensure delivery of project objectives
  • Previous experience in developing detailed project plans using project management tools and methodologies
  • Strong contract negotiation and management skills
  • Superior analytic, problem solving and judgement skills
  • Demonstrate ability to effectively communicate ideas and actions to those at all levels of the organization
  • Ability to thrive in a fast paced, challenging and constantly changing work environment
  • Strong technical skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook); MS Project and scheduling software
  • Thorough knowledge of construction accounting practices.
