Construction Design Manager

Position Overview

Beedie Construction Ltd. is seeking a qualified, experienced candidate to support project teams during the design/development and preconstruction phase of multiple projects. Responsibilities will include the review of construction documents to ensure details and design standards during the design/development are consistent with the Beedie requirements across all.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work with project management, consultants, development and operations to establish and maintain a Beedie ‘standards’ library for construction details and specifications that will include standard drawing details to cover a multitude of differing building conditions.
  • Work closely with project management, development and operations to implement Beedie standard construction details throughout the design/development process to ensure consistency across all projects
  • Work with project management and operations during the preconstruction to deliver drawings and specifications that are complete and constructible that follow Beedie standards
  • Review construction information and details with the project teams during the construction phase of the project and capture new and/or revised details that should be reused in future projects
  • Attend design review meetings to provide guidance for efficient construction practices consistent with Beedie standards and specific project requirements
  • Ensure the construction drawings adheres to the contractual requirements and specifications of the proposed development by understanding the assigned contracts and applying that knowledge to the project
  • Work with the project team to maintain budget controls during the construction phase and ensure documentation of all approved changes to the budget and scope
  • Provide value engineering options as required, taking into consideration cost, schedule, maintenance, and lifecycle implications
  • Work with the project team to track outstanding issues throughout the preconstruction process with assigned responsibilities and completion dates required for each action item
  • Review drawings, specifications and other construction documents for constructability, completeness of information and potential risks while ensuring the drawings include proper and extensive details that are required to implement the work on site
  • Work with project team to establish new and manage existing trade relationships
  • Work with the project team to create preconstruction and construction schedules
  • Assist project management in providing tender scopes of work by providing design and construction specifications.  Work with project management to ensure the shop drawing review process is accurately completed
  • Work closely with site operations to review the accuracy of the provided issued for construction documentation and details and make adjustments to the Beedie standards as required
  • Keeping up to date with changing legislation and building codes of practice to ensure compliance

Desired Skills and Experience

  • Minimum of 3-5 years industrial experience
  • Architectural and Building Technology diploma or equivalent
  • Strong knowledge of commercial construction methods
  • Understanding tilt up construction methodology, building code and municipal bylaws
  • Must be able to work with a wide variety of people in a fast-paced, often changing, environment
  • Ability to use AutoCAD is an asset, but not mandatory
  • Strong computer proficiency is required, including Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Energetic, confident, drive and results-orientated
  • Excellent communication, organization and interpersonal skills
