A key member of both Construction and Finance, providing decision support through critical thinking, creativity and collaboration while overseeing Beedie Construction’s accounting and reporting. Requires a strong grasp of construction operations, balanced with expertise in project accounting, financial reporting and GAAP compliance.

Key Responsibilities:

Operational decision support:

Provide strategic decision support to Construction

  • Support the monthly cost to complete process
  • Integrate construction forecasts with overall development proforma for timely project reporting
  • Work with key stakeholders to develop performance metrics, both at the job level and for the department
  • Identify opportunities to provide value by supporting the Project Management and leadership team
  • Prepare cash flow and income forecasts on job specific and overall divisional basis
  • Recommend and implement new financial systems, controls and processes in collaboration with Construction and Finance teams
  • Analyze construction budgets, forecasts and performance and communicate findings to key stakeholders

Accounting and Reporting

Oversee accounting and finance related activities for the Construction operations

  • Oversee all aspects of job reporting, including costs, schedule, quality and safety
  • Oversee job structure and coding to ensure appropriate allocation, especially for multi-phase and multi-use projects
  • Manage construction billings and collections
  • Prepare quarterly dashboard, reporting on key departmental objectives. Present results and findings to senior management
  • Support quarterly reporting and year-end audit, including preparation of certain working papers, analysis and other support as required
  • Review construction financial statements, identifying and explaining variances

Leadership

Manage a team and provide effective leadership across the company

  • Awareness of the unique needs and requirements of both the Finance and Construction teams, providing leadership to both groups in an effort to support an environment of collaboration and continuous improvement. 
  • Promote culture of teamwork through assisting, coaching, and directing other staff
  • Manage and motivate a team of four project accountants and one contract administrator

  • Proven leader with strong project management
  • Significant experience in construction operations and project accounting
  • Capacity to connect with construction team, understand their perspective and communicate effectively with an operational mindset
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a natural inclination for collaboration
  • Skillfully challenge assumptions and ask the hard questions
  • An organized self-starter with a strong work ethic who is able to succeed both independently and collaboratively within a team environment
  • Able to be flexible and manage multiple objectives, likely with competing priorities
  • Strong attention to detail balanced with an awareness of the bigger picture
  • University degree and accounting designation (CA, CPA, CGA, CMA)
  • Strong understanding of GAAP, REALpac and financial reporting
  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of MS Office
  • Experience with Sage 300/Timberline or other Construction specific accounting software
