Tax Specialist

The Tax Specialist will be responsible for assisting in tax compliance, planning, and internal and external tax reporting, as well as identifying best practices and optimizing the real estate group and family office tax structure. 

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Coordinate with corporate finance team and business units to obtain tax reporting and tax compliance information
  • Assist in the preparation and filing of tax returns – personal (T1), corporate (T2), and trust (T3)
  • Assist in the preparation, review and filing of information returns - partnership (T5013), statements of Investment Income (T5) and statement of contract payments (T5018) for sub-trades
  • Manage and update the ACB and At-Risk Amount schedule for all partnerships
  • Assist with the tax provisions and tax disclosures for financial statement purposes
  • Review quarterly and provide year-end working papers and supporting documents for external auditors
  • Assist in the preparation, review and filing of GST returns for all reporting entities
  • Review and manage indirect tax reviews
  • Liaise with CRA auditors  and external auditors as required to facilitate inquiries and audits
  • Research a variety of tax issues and prepare memo’s to file
  • Assist tax department with tax planning for both corporate group and family office
  • Create resolutions for dividend, return of capital and capital dividend payment
  • Initiate and prepare steps for dissolutions or windup of inactive entities as necessary
  • Oversee the preparation of various operating agreements to align with tax planning and development business
  • Ensure compliance with the organization’s internal controls in relation to tax and relevant accounting and tax policies
  • Keep up-to-date of the latest tax developments and issues that impact the organization such as changes in legislation
  • Keep up-to-date safe income calculation for our operating group
  • Prepare cash flow requirements for the tax department by calculating and coordinating monthly tax installments 
  • Provide tax ad hoc guidance for business units 

Desired Skills and Experience:

  • Accounting designation (CPA/CA)
  • Minimum 2 years’ professional experience in taxation, real estate industry is preferred  
  • Enrollment or in progress of CICA In-Depth
  • Strong work ethic and sense of responsibility and confidentiality
  • Strong decision making, communication (both verbal and written), and analytical skills
  • An organized self-starter who is attentive to detail and able to work independently 
  • Ability to prioritize work and manage multiple tasks
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to contribute effectively within a team environment
  • Solid computer skills – Tax Prep, Timberline, MS Office, Taxnet Pro
