The Manager, Tax will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the tax function. The role will initially have one direct report, and will work closely with all members of the Finance team, as well as members of the operational divisions.

Key Responsibilities

Compliance:

  • Manage all aspects of the Group’s compliance, including preparation of more complex returns and review of other returns, filing elections, paying installments, etc.
  • Review and supervisory responsibilities for internally prepared tax reporting and tax accounting.
  • Complete audited tax provision and rate reconciliation for consolidated financial statements.
  • Identification and resolution of Canadian tax issues (federal and provincial income tax, GST/PST and other indirect taxes).
  • Assist in review of monthly GST returns and lead all excise tax reviews.

Planning:

  • Identification and mitigation of tax risks.
  • Lead research on tax positions and planning opportunities.
  • Coordination of advice on the Canadian tax impact of proposed business transactions, financing transactions, holding company structures, restructuring transactions and tax due diligence.
  • Build relationships within the business in order to better understand business issues and opportunities.
  • Provide advice and recommendations regarding income tax considerations to operating units, taking into consideration changing business needs, reorganizations and new lines of business.
  • Maintain current database of various tax attributes throughout the Group, including safe-income calculations.

Other:

  • Management and coordination of external tax advisors with regard to outsourced compliance and other project-based work.
  • Facilitate and manage inquiries and audits from tax authorities and other relevant government agencies.
  • Lead all ad hoc projects, including tax pro forma’s, deal specific tax advisory, etc.

Experience:

  • CPA designation.
  • Successful completion of Level II In-depth.
  • 7-10 years’ experience with tax compliance, planning and research.
  • Previous leadership experience.
  • Experience with preparation of T1’s, T2’s, T3’s, T5013’s, S.85 and S.97 elections.
  • Prior work on estate planning and/or real estate clients an asset.
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to problem solve and deal with ambiguity.
  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly, concisely and to work comfortably with all levels of management.
  • Ability to prioritize and multitask.
  • Advanced proficiency in MS office and tax software.
  • Well organized, self-starter.
  • High level of attention to detail.
